icing…and fish tacos

500fish tacos

i’m back from a lovely break spent on the california coast with my little family.  we spent days at the beach with cool pacific breezes {which were heavenly, especially given the east coast heat wave we would have experienced otherwise} and spent time enjoying area attractions.  it was so good to have a new routine – or a lack thereof – for a little while, so good to enjoy my husband 24/7, so good to eat the fish tacos about which i’ve heard my husband talk for years.  and while i enjoyed our trip immensely, it’s good to come home too…good to fall back into familiar rhythms, good to sleep in our own beds, good to feel grateful for all we have.

it’s nice to shake things up once in a while, isn’t it?  admittedly, it’s especially nice when that shaking involves a sweet vacation.  but, in general, a little change, a little shifting, can be good for the soul…i know i sometimes get super focused on things, and eventually that drains me.  whether it’s something pleasant like vacation or something of a more challenging nature, i need these shifts on occasion, need a nudge to look at things from a new perspective and from a little distance.

and what it comes down to is this {and this is not news to me, just a reflection}:   i’ve got a good life…a family i love, a comfortable home in which to live, food on the table.  everything else is icing on the cake.  and the nuisances, the stresses? {because we all have them in one form or another}  well, they’re a necessary part of the cake.  they help in the balancing of things, the perspective.  without one, how can we truly know the other?

and so we’re settling back in, adjusting to time zone changes, doing laundry, looking through pictures.  you know, the icing stuff.
i hope you’ve got some delicious cake in your life, baked in balanced proportions.  and i hope you’ve got a little extra dab of icing.
and, yes, it would have been nice to have a picture of cake or cupcakes to share with you today, but i will not be baking anything like that anytime soon, as we indulged in many desserts while on vacation.  so i’ll ask you to be satisfied, please, with a picture of my fish tacos…which were everything my husband said they were.

p.s. thank you for all the sweet comments on my last post where i mentioned my break.  each wish was appreciated, and made me smile and feel loved.

sending a little love your way, m

  1. So glad you had a wonderful time and nice break. It’s wonderful to have the blessing of travel to add the icing on the cake of life. Now, I am really hungry for both fish tacos and some good cake with plenty of icing. lol!

  2. So pleased you had a lovely break. Always nice to lose the routine and spend time together. Those tacos look yummy!
