:: A Tiny Bit of Quiet :: January 24

A quiet journaling series.  For the month of January.  xo

We have two ears and one mouth so that we can listen twice as much as we speak.
~ Epictetus ~

Think about a recent conversation you had with someone. Was it a conversation of interest to you, or was it of a more obligatory nature (perhaps at your place of work)? Whatever the tenor of the conversation, did you share your perspective?  Did you listen to the other person’s perspective too??

On a scale of 1-10 (10 being very talkative), where do you place yourself?
On a scale of 1-10 (10 being a very good listener), where do you place yourself?
Be honest with yourself; no number is “wrong”.  Understand that there are healthy ways to engage in both the talking and the listening in a conversation.  Simply note where you place yourself on each scale.  Is there room for improvement on either scale (or both)?

Write the names of three people with whom you’d like to do a better job listening.
The next time you have a conversation with any of these people, listen more.

If you’re someone who tends to listen more than talk – and that silence comes from an unsteady sense of self, or maybe a lack of confidence – write the names of three people with whom you feel it’s safe to practice talking more.  The next time you’re with any of these people, talk a little more, share more of your story.

I hope you enjoy this quiet bit on this Friday (or whenever you find it).

  1. Thank you so much Michelle for these weekly prompts. They are making me look inward and reflect and most definitely keeping me focused. You’re a doll for doing this.
