Community Heart Write

online writing meetups
1 hour sessions that meet monthly

We all have stories in our hearts.  Let’s put those stories to paper.
Join me monthly and we’ll do this together.

Based on the Write Your Heart workshop, this monthly meetup allows more of us to gather at one time.  It’s an invitation for us to gather once a month and share writing space (and heart space).

We’ll gather on Zoom, and I’ll read short pieces (poetry, excerpts, quotations) that inspire + guide you into a quiet space for writing.  I’ll offer you prompts; then we’ll write for short, timed sessions.

I’m putting a pause on these group classes for now.  It’s helpful if I can track how many people are interested, so you can put your name on the interest list right here.
There’s no obligation to sign up for class; this list simply notes your interest!

Here are some questions you might have…

Do I need to be an experienced writer?
Nope.  You just need to be yourself. (see that? you’re a shoo-in.)
This class is for all writing levels, and is for anyone who likes to play with words.

What kind of writing will we do?

We’ll work mostly with freewriting which is writing whatever comes to mind (to heart) without worry for grammar or spelling or neatness or structure or “being good”.  Our writing will aim to dip into the subconscious and sidestep the inner critic.  The writing is timed (10 minutes) which provides a gentle container to hold your words (your heart).  We’ll do three-four bursts of writing together.

How is Community Heart Write different from Write Your Heart?

The biggest difference is that the Community Heart Write sessions accommodate a larger group of people.  In the community writes, I’ll facilitate brief discussions, with the majority of the time held for writing alongside one another.

Looking for a cozy, intimate writing circle where there’s more discussion and you can share your work?

Write Your Heart might be for you.  Have a look right here.

What do I need for class?

You need internet access and a computer/phone (with camera) so you can gather with the group on Zoom.

You’ll also need paper and pen.  I know lots of you like typing on the keyboard (I like that too, sometimes), but this work is especially powerful when your hand is holding pen and the meat of your hand is resting on paper.  Thoughts (stories) flow differently when the movement is from head and heart through arm and hand to pen and paper.  We’re accessing a different part of our brains.  It’s pretty cool.  It’s thrilling.  It’s healing.

An open heart is helpful.

What if I need to miss a class?

No worries.  Community Heart Write sessions will be recorded and I’ll send a recording a few days after we meet.  Then you can write at a time most convenient for you.

Why write in this way, and why write in a group?

This kind of writing is powerful and healing, bringing forth a deep awareness that we all have (but sometimes forget we have).  We might think the writing is a hot mess, a jumble of words; we might think we’ve made no sense.  But then, somewhere in those quickly-written lines is a sentence, a phrase, maybe a single word that leads you to whisper Yessss orOoooh, that.  These kernels can offer insight into experiences you’re working through personally, they can initiate questions for digging deeper, they can generate ideas for further writing,

This kind of writing is a container for creative expression, mindful exploration, inspired being.

This kind of writing can be reworked and edited for more polished writing later.  Maybe it becomes a poem or a song; maybe a piece for your blog; maybe content for a book.  Or maybe – and this is thrilling too – the writing is glorious and freely written, released onto the page, end of story.  You get to decide.

While I love (love, love) the small writing circles of Write Your Heart, I realize that workshop doesn’t suit everyone.

So…once a month.  It’s easier to set aside one hour each month, yes?
Working in a group (with scheduled dates) (that you put into your planner) (so you set aside time for YOU) creates accountability.  Also, there’s something to be said for lots of us gathering and writing with intention, together.  There’s a certain energy – vibe – flow that will grow when we meet for that hour, when we get quiet, when we put our pens to paper, when we write our hearts.

Why write in a group?  In a word, powerful.
